I just recovered from a cold and realize how my routine has changed over the years.
I used to take all kinds of antihistamines, cough syrups and cough drops, but ended up severely dehydrated with a hoarse voice by the time my recovery kicked in- often resulting in additional weeks unable to sing despite improved immune system.
Here are some alternative options that result that protect my voice while sick:
Ice Chips over Cough Drops for Sore Throat Pain! That's right. I'll take some ice and throw it into my food processor when a sore throat taunts me. Then when I let them melt in my mouth the cold is the ultimate numbing factor. This is less drying than menthol cough drops over time.
Gargle with salt water I will do this religiously. If I happen to wake up in the middle of the night while sick, I will also gargle throughout the night. Salt has wonderful healing properties. I will commit to this routine even after my voice has markedly improved just to be sure.
Steam for Congestion or Dry Throat I use a facial steamer to hydrate my voice immediately. Although, I drink impressive amounts of water while sick, the steam is an immediate effect especially when I awake parched.
In short, do your best to take care of your voice and avoid the side effects of medication. Obviously, it's always best to feel comfortable but be aware of how dehydrating many of the current remedies are and how this can setback your return to singing. Lastly, do your best to eat & drink healthy while sick (and always!) in order to provide your body with the nutrients it desires.
