At Venice School of Music we are very focused on recreational music lessons for adults and the study of music as a hobby for all. Learning music as an adult it beneficial for various reasons- but one of the concerns is how can the adult student commit to practice? How can the adult student find the time to learn or improve?
After many years teaching adults music lessons , I feel there are few helpful approaches for setting up a practice schedule for adults. Here are 2 of my favorites!
Make sure to enroll in a weekly lesson time: For adults, I see this is very helpful due to the accountability factor. Taking the time to show up and meet your teacher will keep you on track to at least learn a little bit. With the time constraints of jobs, families, knowing you have a lesson once a week might help you to cram in practice once or twice, plus a lesson - it will keep you committing to the language of music on a regular basis.
Set up a fisable practice plan and repretoire with your Teacher: As I teach adults, I'm always striving to take into consideration the reality of their schedules. How much can they practice? What is the best repretoire for someone with little time to learn? Do you just want to hang out and have a piano or singign lesson once a week and experience the joy of it without outside work? All of these approaches are completely acceptable. It's kind of like saying you're going on a vacation to Italy and just want to learn how to order food and get around vs move to Italy and pass the citizenhip language exam. Which level of music is for you? Fluency? Learning chords? 3 songs for playing a parties?
If you're wondering if music lesson are right for you as an adult, take these tips into consideration going into your first lesson. A good music teacher will be aware of these issues and how to guide you into your music studies. If you want to take lessons with me, I'm available for in-person music lessons for adults in Venice, Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey area. I also offer an adult chorus and online lessons around the world!
