Why take piano lessons?
Piano lessons are an amazing means for adding more creativity and confidence to your life. If you're someone who loves music, there are so many benefits for your brain and body.
"Piano playing involves an intricate interplay of the cognitive, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal systems, wherein the performer’s body is a necessary medium between the musical idea and the musical instrument"
Confidence: Piano classes will force you to perform for a piano teacher and perhaps even an audience. Although it might seem scary at first, many people describe the thrill of the commitment to learn a piece of music. Once they discover they have improved their ear trainging, timing and ability to read, presenting this for an audience can help to develop a great sense of confidence through this achievement.
Concentration: Learning piano is a great way to practice your concentration skills. Learning to play requires exercising various parts of your brain. You need to practice timing- which requires no distractions. In addition, if you decide to learn to read music, this is another area you have to focus on. Lastly, piano lessons require listening skills. You have to zero in and develop great ears for pitch and timing.
Creativity: If you get the sense that you need more creative spark in your life, piano is an excellent way to achieve this! Part of piano lessons is dynamics & phrasing. What are dynamics? Dynamics are the levels at which you play piano. Is it soft? Loud? Are you building in to a crescendo or playing staccatto? Likewise, phrasing is a music sentence. How you express yourself as an artist.
Stress Relief! As a piano player, I can say that in stressful times, there's nothing better than sitting in front of piano and jamming out to some Mozart. I love the feeling of my muscles focuses on creating sounds and then hearing this beautiful music take me to another world. It's a great escape!
Interpersonal Skills: Playing the piano is an amazing talent to share with friends. I've lost count of the times I've been near a piano and asked to play some popular songs. Hours pass by as friends enjoy singing along, filled with smiles and laughter. Even if they're not singing, friends love to relax and listen to their favorite tunes.
Piano Lessons for All Ages
Every single age group stands to benefit from lessons!
Piano Lessons for Kids: Learning piano is an excellent method for instilling discipline and routine in a young person's life. It's a skill that can be easily developed individually. As a child, I enjoyed practicing my extracurricular activities at my own pace. The most rewarding aspect was that, after extensive practice, I played in bands and secured lead roles in musicals and a cappella groups at school, thanks to my dedicated musical studies outside of school. In addition, Venice School of Music has occasional recitals and open mics so that students can meet one another and share their talents.
Piano Lessons for Adults: Piano lessons as an adult is a great time to begin! At Venice School of Music, we'll always assess your goals as an adult student. We won't pressure you into lesson formats like the last century haha with a mean teacher making you do the songs and methods they demand. In defense of these teachers, the world has changed so much with the internet. We can pull up sheet music at the drop of a hat, or utilize incredible apps to get the chords. It's a brand new era for piano lessons!
How often should you take piano lessons?
As with a language, consistent practice is highly important if you're looking to become a proficient piano player.
Weekly Piano Lessons: This is definitely the most ideal situation. If you can afford weekly lessons, this will keep you on track to play full songs quickly. Even if you have a week where you can't find the time to practice, the added accountability to check in with your teacher will help you quickly recall your songs and muscle memory. (Furthermore, most people will squeeze in a little practice time knowing they have an upcoming piano lesson which is far better than nothing at all!)
What should you look for in your piano teacher?
Everyone has different goals in piano. Here's a few things your might be looking for in your piano teacher and lesson formats.
Does your teacher require you to perform in recitals/open mics etc? This is an excellent way to grow as a pianist. You also may realize this stresses you out and isn't for you, so make sure you are in the right hands!
Do they offer personalized lessons or require specific methods or both? Make sure the learning path suits you. Some teacher have a bit more lenient ways of approaching lessons, while others have strict methods they adhere to. At Venice School of Music, we lean into the direction that suits you best.
Does your piano teacher help you to come up with goals?
It might be good for you to work with piano teachers that help you develop a set of goals that you're required to meet. If you're not sure what your goals are, they should be able to help you establish a realistic set of goals.
What can you learn in piano lessons?
Learn to read music: Not required! But it will definitely make it easier when you can sit down and play any song. The only set back for learning to read music- it takes time, so this skills required patience and dedicated practice.
Learn Chords: Chords are a quick way to learning songs. Much like the guitar, if you can play chords on piano you'll be able to play lots of songs quickly.
Ear Training: Whether you can read music or not, hearing songs on the piano will train your ear to recognize key signature and time signatures.
Improvisation: This is a wonderful life skill! Learning to listen and react without poise and elegance is one of the beautiful benefits of improvisation.
Music Theory: Perhaps you have a bit of a math brain? I do! I love the math of music. It's someitmes challenging and a great way to keep that brain of yours firing on all cylinders!
Frequently Asked Questions about Piano Lessons
What age should my child start piano?
At Venice school of Music we recommend that children start in a school that has musicianship for toddlers etc.. This is less costly, and will make sure young musicians learn how FUN music can be. I like to start private piano lessons once students having basic reading skills and are able to tell their right from left hand :-) 7 or 8 is an excellent age!
Is 30 minutes enough time for a piano lesson?
Yes 30 minutes is perfect! A lesson usually starts with maybe some warm up or scales and then a student presents the songs they worked on in the previous week. After these songs are perfected there may be notes to continue working on them or students "graduate" towards new songs.
Do adults learn piano faster?
Not Necessarily. I like to say that adults UNDERSTAND Piano faster, but developing muscles memory for an adults can be way more complicated than for a 3 year old sponge!
Do I need a piano before i start piano lessons?
If you suspect that you want to play piano, I acutally recommend taking a lesson FIRST. Many students buy a piano then find it's not right for them. Furthermore, there are so many levels of piano. 88 keys, weight keys, smaller size, furniture style, digital pianos, midi-controlled pianos etc... It's better to gage what type of piano player you'd like to be before getting a piano that's not right for you. I always say, get the piano that INSPIRES you. If the cheap one doesn't make you want to play, probably should save for something better. (Trust me i've learned the hard way and have sold lots of pianos over the years!

How much should I practice piano?
I recommend practicing piano at least 20-30 minutes about 5 days a week. As I have said many times, piano is a language. Speaking French once a week isn't going to get your very far and piano is the same.

How long do I have to take piano before I can play songs?
I make sure that every student can play at least the bones of a song in their first lesson. If you walk out of your lessons without a song to play, you'll likely bore very quickly of your piano lessons.

Venice school of Music is a small boutique music school. It's just one teacher and an assistant to help with booking and classes. We aren't going to have a corporate front desk and are aware of all the ins and outs of your experience with us.
Flexible Scheduling is one of our biggest draws:
Some school have tuition and only offer monthly study. In addition, due to the needs of their teachers, they have to require this. Since this is a one-person institution, flexibility works great for me as well. You can come whenever there is availability. I recommend booking a week to 2 weeks in advance to secure your spot.
Cool Studio: At Venice School of Music, our studio has a very cool vibe. In my life, I've worked at many prestigious music studios and I like to bring this vibe to music study as well. feels a lot more like a recording studio. Some of the music schools have a very sterile, corporate feel, but this is definitely a personal space for being creative and inspired.
At Venice School of Music we're in a great location. Firstly, it's located in a commercial building. There's a bathroom and a lobby for you to wait in before your lesson or while waiting for you ride. In addition there's a parking spot so no searching for spots on the street. The studio is located right in a corner close to Venice, Mar Vista and Santa Monica. In addition, the neighborhood is filled with great places to grab a bit or run errands (Whole Foods!) if you're child is taking a lesson. The lobby is also great for parents to wait while their child takes lessons.
